All the turtles on this page are in the family Emydidae and genus Chrysemys.
They include many of the most popular water turtles found in North America.

There is one species of painted turtles (picta) with four subspecies:
Eastern - Chrysemys p. picta
Midland - Chrysemys p. marginata
Southern - Chrysemys p. dorsalis
and Western - Chrysemys p. belli.

We find that eastern and midland painted turtles are found together and interbreed.
Basically the midlands have a pattern on their plastrons and the easterns are
patternless on their plastrons. It is common to get both from the same clutch of eggs.

There is one species of pond slider (scripta) with four subspecies:
Yellow-bellied - Chrysemys s. scripta
Red-eared - Chrysemys s. elegans
Cumberland - Chrysemys s. troosti
and Big Bend - Chrysemys s. gaigeae.

The red-eared sliders are popular with breeders who have produced many
interesting and beautiful color variations.

The species of cooters (floridana) has three subspecies:
Florida - Chrysemys f. floridana
Peninsula - Chrysemys f. peninsularis
and Missouri Slider - Chrysemys f. boyi

The Florida red-bellied turtle, Chrysemys nelsoni, has no subspecies.
